Overview
Ammonite Falls is located near Nanaimo, BC, and is a beautiful waterfall with a sheet of water that drops into the canyon from above. The waterfall is normally best viewed during the spring or winter seasons when the water flow is higher.
From the parking lot along Creekside Place, walk south along the road and go right onto the gravel road as you walk past the metal gate. The gravel road leaves the neighbourhood and enters the forest as you quickly make time up a gradual incline. Watch for signs on the right and, at the junction, go right and down the hill into the forest following the trail.
Continue along the trail as it crosses a logging road and arrives at a junction. Go left at the junction and continue your walk through the second generation forest. When you reach another sign at a junction, go right.
The trail passes a park boundary sign and continues through the forest until you reach the top of the falls. Walk down the steps and into the canyon where you will see Ammonite Falls as it cascades from the ledge above in to the rocky pool at the bottom. The waterfall was named after fossils that were found in the canyon walls.
After enjoying the waterfall, walk back up the steps and out of the canyon, returning to the trail as you leave the park behind. Go left the junction, then right at the second junction, crossing the logging road and following the trail through the forest. When the trail reaches the gravel road, go left and follow the gravel road back down to Creekside Place where you began your hike.
