Overview
Spectacle Lake is a scenic lake with a short hiking trail that loops around the lake. The lake offers a great place to swim during the warmer months and is a great place to fish for Eastern Brook or Cutthroat Trout.
From the parking lot, walk past the map board and follow the wide trail as you make your way towards the lake. After the long straight stretch, continue walking straight, just off the trail, to where the beach area is. The beach offers a great view of Spectacle Lake.
Return to the trail and begin the hike around the lake. The first section of trail is wide and fairly flat, however watch for small paths off to the left that go out onto rocky outcrops with views of the lake to explore. The trail continues into the forest and there are no views of the lake through the north section as the route wraps around the marsh area.
At a junction, make sure to go left to continue the loop as, shortly afterward, the trail crosses three small wooden bridges. Along the west side of the lake, the trail is much narrower as it weaves its way through the forest and occasionally offers glimpses of Spectacle Lake.
Continue following the trail as it eventually crosses another wooden bridge. A short distance further and you reach the beginning where you began next to the map board. On a warm sunny day, return to the beach area for a refreshing swim in the lake.
Driving Directions
Spectacle Lake Provincial Park is located just off of Highway #1 along the Malahat.
From downtown Victoria, drive towards Douglas Street and head northbound, leaving the city area as the road turns into Highway #1. Follow the highway for roughly 20km, passing through Goldstream Provincial Park and continuing north.
After passing the turnoff for Shawnigan Lake Road (don't take that turnoff), stay in the left lane and move to the left turn lane for Whittaker Road. Carefully turn left across the highway and follow Whittaker Road. When the road reaches a "V" junction after 800m, go right and drive into the parking area for Spectacle Lake Provincial Park.
